The Noseless Fighter

This is the Grumman XF5F Skyrocket, a twin-engine prototype carrier fighter. Everything about it was designed to improve its ease and efficiency in carrier operations.

Its cockpit was placed far forward and its nose ended at the wing, giving the pilot excellent forward and downward visibility – both critical when landing on a moving ship. It had counter-rotating propellers, which balanced the engines’ powerful torque and eliminated the normal tendency to turn left. This also eased carrier landings and takeoffs. The Skyrocket also had an excellent power-to-weight ratio.
